Genesis and Heritage:
The Society for Bacteriophage Research and Therapy (SBRT), India was conceptualized in 2017 and formally established in 2018 in the historic city of Varanasi,a location of profound scientific symbolism. It was here, in the waters of the Ganges, that the antibacterial properties of bacteriophages were first observed over a century ago. Today, SBRT stands as the custodian of that legacy, reigniting the potential of these "good viruses" to solve modern medicine’s greatest challenge.
Our Mission:
Combating Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). We aim to fight the Antibiotic Risis crisis. With the rise of multidrug-resistant pathogens like ESKAPE bacteria, Mycobacteria and others, rendering conventional antibiotics ineffective, the world needs a viable alternative. SBRT is dedicated to transitioning bacteriophage research from the laboratory bench to real worls application. We champion the "One Health" approach, exploring phage applications not just in human health, but in veterinary medicine, agriculture, and environmental management of river systems and sewage.
A platform for collaboration, SBRT brings together over a hundred of the nation's leading scientists, clinicians, and industry, fostering a diverse community committed to innovation. We aim to bridge the gaps, leverage the technology and build complementary teams, ensuring phage research yields tangible healthcare and environment solutions.
Driving Innovation
Conferences:
Our flagship event, the International Conference on Bacteriophage Research and Antimicrobial Resistance (ICBRAR), travels across India from Vellore to Mumbai, Chennai to Varanasi, creating a nationwide forum for knowledge exchange.
